Welcome to Plume IQ - our reveal of data-driven intelligence and consumer insights from 3 billion connected devices and 60 million locations, managed by Plume’s cloud platform. The data below is from a sample of our locations gathered last year.

Gaming Data Consumption Spikes Over the Holidays

Plume IQ

Let’s start with a look at the most recent holiday data from 2023. Throughout the season, children and adults alike excitedly unwrap and unbox new devices that they receive - or purchase for themselves.

Our data indicates that gaming systems continue to top gift lists. In 2023, the Nintendo Switch was the most popular new device added to the Plume network, followed by PlayStations and Xboxes.

Perhaps gaming is one of the reasons that people chose to stay close to home and accounts for another seasonal trend Plume has identified - an increase in data usage over the holidays. Compared to December 20, 2023, by Christmas Day people were consuming 81% more data from gaming systems.

2023 - Data Consumption Keeps Rising

In fact, looking back at the year as a whole, we can see that data usage continues to rise. Looking at the homes and businesses we sampled, our analysis notes that in the United States, average data use rose 11% in 2023 as compared to 2022. For the same time period, data usage increased by 7% in Europe and 16% in Japan. Not surprisingly, Plume saw some of the biggest rises in data usage from smartphones, virtual reality devices, and laptops. Impressively, even on local networks smartphone use still rose 17% showing that it is the main device for many people.

Security Threats Increase in U.S.

It is almost certain that data and device usage will continue to increase, leading to more opportunities for bad actors. Users need to remain vigilant about security as cyber threats are always evolving with tactics ranging from typo-filled spam texts to sophisticated website injections. In 2023, our data continued to show an increase in malicious attempts, phishing attempts and security risks.

In the U.S., when comparing data from 2023 to 2022, Plume saw instances of malware increase by 90%, botnet attacks increase by 153%, phishing attacks increase by 19%, and spyware increase by 39%.
